Verse: “If this be so, our God whom we serve is able to deliver us from the burning fiery furnace, and he will deliver us out of your hand, O king. But if not, be it known to you, O king, that we will not serve your gods or worship the golden image that you have set up.” Daniel 3:17-18
What is a grunt? You may wonder this whenever you see the cross rifles on a grunt style T-Shirt, or all the grunt mentions in the veteran community. You may be a support soldier and have been called a “POG” which stands for person other than grunt, and you have no idea what it means. Well, you have come to the right place for an answer.
A grunt is a front-line soldier. He is the one who does the fighting, the killing. It is him who digs the fox hole, shoots the machine gun, and barely eats or sleeps. As an Infantryman I have always heard it argued (and argued myself) that only the infantry are grunts. Yet in the good grace of us all getting along this can be extended to the majority of combat arms and the police (but not CAV Scouts hahahahaha, I’m just kidding).
To be a grunt you have to have a certain mentality. Sure, you probably just bought the line from your recruiter that if you became a grunt, you would be Rambo, but all you got was a ruck sack and a E-Tool (small shovel). But in order to deal with the lack of food and sleep you need to have a sort of rebellious attitude and one that says "screw it" it difficult situations. You must be tough, or at least dumb enough to be in bad situations and fight your way out. That is the life of the grunt. It is thankless and tiring, yet there is no more rewarding job.
When you become a grunt, you are immediately indoctrinated or at least encouraged to take part in all kinds of debauchery. Strippers, whores, drugs, liquor, it’s all strongly encouraged in a job where you never know when you will take your last breath. I have seen many Christian friends fall for this trap. They want to be good infantryman, so they go along with what the rest of the squad or platoon is doing. They take their natural instinct to stand and fight and only put it into their job but leave it out of their faith.
As Christians we are at war with the world. Sometimes you can be like I was and be the only Christian in your whole company, or at least the only one who is open about it. This takes the courage of a grunt to stand up and live for the faith. You can take that same grunt attitude and translate it to your faith. Be on the front line and stand for what you believe, fight.
As average Christians you can be grunts as well. You are in your foxhole whether that be in your work, home, or Jiu Jitsu club. You need to fight for the faith no matter what the circumstance is. Be like Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego when they were told to bow to the golden image, when they told King Nebuchadnezzar that live or die, they will not reject God. They were Grunts, Godly Grunts.
