Verse: And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. Ephesians 2:1-3
Satan is the prince of the power of the air described here in our verse above. He has power and control through his influence and the work of his demons to move within our culture. He traps the blinded sinners and deceives saints into believing that what he is offering is good, but rather it leads to death. Satan has a massive impact on our culture.
All you have to do is look around us to see this. He taps into our own sinfulness and desire to do our will instead of God’s and magnifies it all around us. Look at our music and the filth the number one songs are saying. Songs that not only praise selfishness and greed but also sexual promiscuity, violence, theft, and every other sin under the sun.
We see it in our institutions as well. At the time of writing this (2021), some schools are striving to indoctrinate all their students with the LBGTQ (Homosexual) agenda. They are trying to get them young so that as they grow old they will see nothing wrong with this gross violation of both the natural and spiritual law. There was even a gay men's choir who made a song about how they are coming for our children.
In the year 2020 and 2021 here in America, we saw all the institutions of our country and culture bow to the “woke” agenda in conformity. It would be one thing if these people believed what they were saying and subscribing to, but it seems that they are bullied. They are bullied into thinking that if they do not a mob of people on the internet and in the street (BLM and ANTIFA) will try to shut them down.
Satan has control over the culture of the world and influences everything to exalt himself as lord, not Christ. As we talked about in studying where Satan came from, we saw that Satan has always and will always want to exalt himself over God. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness in Matthew 4, we see Satan’s power and desire in verses 8-9. “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. And he said to him, “All these I will give you if you will fall and worship me.”
Satan does rule this world and wants to lead as many people astray as he possibly can. Since he is not God and never will be higher, he will blind and trip up as many as he can. He and his fellow demons use our culture to cloud people’s minds so that they cannot see the light. They fill their minds with all kinds of filth and turn people into themselves to pursue the passions of the flesh and not surrender their lives to the Lord.
Next time you listen to a song or watch a movie from our popular culture, stop and think about who this is glorifying? Is it glorifying the one true God who loves us? Or is it promoting the sinfulness of a Satan-influenced world in an attempt to rob you of intimacy with the almighty?
