Know Your Kit: The Sword of the Spirit

Verse: and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. Ephesians 6:17b

So far in the explanation of the believer’s armor, all the pieces of kit have been defensive in nature. When standing firm, it is important to have a strong defense which is what our armor accomplishes, but now it is time to go on the attack.

We are given two offensive weapons, the sword of the spirit (which is the word of God) and call for fire which is prayer. It is with these two weapons that we can beat back our enemy. This comes not only in the time of temptation and personal trial but also when proclaiming the truth like when we defend our faith.

I find it interesting like our salvation, the weapon of our warfare has nothing to do with us. It is the word of God that works when we are confronting darkness, not anything I or you say or do. Now with that being said, we need to know how to use it, but it is not anything special that man makes, rather the revealed word of God. His word has power.

In this section talking about our armor, we are going to discuss the power of the sword of the spirit. The power is in his word, but we need to know how to use it. How to speak to people with the scriptures and reveal God’s word to them. Now there is no hocus pocus involved with this or magical chants. But rather studying the word and showing people its interpretation and application.

We need to be strong in our understanding of God’s word. This comes through meditation, prayer, reading, and studying the word of God. We need to memorize the scriptures. David says in his psalm, “Thy word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against thee.

When Paul confronted the world in spiritual warfare he went to the scriptures. When Jesus was tempted in the wilderness he combated Satan with Scripture. When the apostles were confronted and tried the ground they stood on was scripture. The word of God is what created this who earth. It is the most powerful weapon on this earth.

We do not fight warfare in the spiritual realm as we do as grunts in the military. 1 Corinthians 10:3-6, “For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds. We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ”

We go on offense with the power of God. He is the one who has the power through prayer and his word. Though he has the power remember that we need to learn to wield that sword.
