Know Your Kit

Verse: Therefore, take up the full armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having done everything, to stand firm. Stand firm, therefore, having girded your loins with truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace. In addition to all, having taken up the shield of faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one, also receive the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times with all prayer and petition in the Spirit, and to this end, being on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints, Ephesians 6:13-18

In the military and especially the combat arms wing of it, knowing your kit is extremely important. While I was in the Army infantry and especially doing long-range reconnaissance, knowing my kit was extremely important. We would train in the dark and go through our rucksacks to pull out the called-out equipment. That training helped us in the field and deployment to knowing where our gear was on our person.

This was even more important on my Plate Carrier on deployment. As a squad leader, I ran my guys through countless drills on magazine changes and finding certain items on your kit so that when we were outside the wire you could get the things you needed without removing your eyes from the battlefield around you. The kit protects you in offensive combat, which is why you wear it. Bottom line is that you need to know your kit.

The same is true in spiritual warfare. God has given us an armor or kit that we wear when we go into spiritual battle. We are given 5 pieces of armor as defense and 2 offensive weapons. We will be digging into these in detail in the next 7 sessions.

The five pieces of kit or defensive armor are Truthfulness, Righteousness, Gospel of Peace, Faith, and Salvation. Our two offensive weapons are the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God, and what I like to call, Call for Fire: Prayer. When you go out into a fight, your kit is on you and defends you in the areas that it covers. It does its job without much work from the individual with it on. On the other hand, offensive weapons take training and drills to use. I believe the same concept applies to the spiritual armor that God has gifted us.

As Christians, we are at war with the world around us. Not an actual struggle in the physical realm, but a war in the spiritual one. But as soldiers of the most high, God has not sent us into battle empty-handed. He knows exactly what we need and has given it to us.
