Verse: For one will scarcely die for a righteous person—though perhaps for a good person one would dare even to die—but God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Since, therefore, we have now been justified by his blood, much more shall we be saved by him from the wrath of God. For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, now that we are reconciled, shall we be saved by his life.
Romans 5:7-10
Not many of us could look back and say, “My commander (in the Army or at work) loved me. Maybe he liked me in some way but most of the time we wouldn’t say that he loved us. But those commanders that we had that truly did love us we all remember and will never forget.
Christ, our commander, loves us. And this doesn’t mean He just likes us a lot because we are fighting and striving for Him, but He loves us. And in these verses, we see the depth and scope of that love.
I know when I was serving that I would die for my guys and my country. That is the job of a soldier. But as people, we will rarely give up our lives for someone else, especially someone we don’t know. Sure, we will die for our country or our brothers and sisters doing the work of a soldier, but would we do so in everyday life? Maybe we would.
But when Christ died for us on that rugged old cross, it was not for his friends or brothers exclusively. It was for His enemies, me and you. “While we were still sinners”, it wasn’t because of some miraculous thing that we did, or a sacrifice we performed but that love, that pure love for me and you was displayed on that cross while we were enemies of God. Wow, powerful.
I don’t know that I would die to save the enemy. But that is exactly what Christ was willing to do and did. He knew that His sacrifice on the cross and His blood was the payment to be made for you to live in communion with Him. It was the only way for you to avoid the wrath from God that you and I are rightfully due.
And what were we saved from? We are saved from God’s wrath. God came down in flesh, to be killed so that when He rose again on the third day, we, who are His enemy in sin would be saved from the wrath that He was going to give us. Talk about love! This is “not of works that no one may boast” as Ephesians said, but purely from His grace and mercy.
Remember as you go and fight on for Christ that He has given His life for you. He loves you and wants you to be in communion and fellowship with Him not only as His soldier but as a friend. He was willing to do this, not because of anything you have done to deserve it. But simply out of His grace and mercy to be displayed. How much more should we, knowing this, strive to walk and fight for Him and the advancement of His Kingdom.
